Directional Drilling
Description of Process
Directional Drilling is a trenchless technique to construct new pipelines on a new alignment. Kembla does not operate it’s own directional drilling crews but has close working relationships with a number of skilled and reputable specialist directional drilling companies.
Typical Applications
Directional Drilling is used where the cost and disruption of open cut methods are too great. The advantages over open cut construction including less disruption, less export of materials, less import of quarry products for backfill, a much smaller footprint, significantly less reinstatement and faster construction time.
Installation
Kembla’s experienced designers will assess the available alignments, seek approval from the client and design the water main in accordance with the scope. Using an approved design, the water main crew in conjunction with a directional driller will construct the new main, perform all tests to verify the integrity and water quality of the new main prior to connecting it to the water main network. Once live, the services will be transferred from the existing main to the new main.
Available Sizes
A large range of pipe sizes can be constructed using this method.
Materials
Directional drilling uses HDPE pipe in the form of a welded string or long coil. Advances in material technology have resulted in fusible PVC pipelines being constructed with this technique.
